Getting Better

AN improved performance at Wycombe today saw Grimsby in front for the majority of the match, and threaten goal on several occasions. However, the end result remained the customary defeat which brings the total number of games without a win to 20.

Michael Jolley one again rung the changes bringing in Hall-Johnson, Berrett and Woolford into midfield and electing for Scott Vernon as the lone striker. The extra man in midfield presumably was aimed at strengthening the side defensively. A sound move against third-placed Wanderers.

It paid quick dividends. Woolford had forced an early save from the 'keeper but the Town winger raced onto a long ball from defence and kept his never to slot past the 'keeper on 15 mins.

Town looked good value for their lead and you got the feeling it might be their day when firstly Wycombe had a goal disallowed for offside, and then a superb double save from McKeown followed by a goalmouth scramble kept their lead intact

Town were cheered off at the break with a rare 1-0 lead, but the feeling was they'd need another to be certain of returning home with something.

After the break Wycombe cranked up the pressure and Vernon became increasingly isolated up front as Town were pressed back.

Vernon was replaced by Matt and Town soon conceded, with their usual Achilles heal of set pieces. The equaliser came from a corner which was initially cleared by went straight to El-Abd who fired it back through a crowded box and into the net.

Kashket was left unmarked at the far post to head Wycombe in front, once again from a corner, within seven minutes.

McKeown kept the margin down to one goal with another double save, denying firstly Tyson and then Akinfenwa.

Town got their chance with 15 minutes to go where Rose was played through in front of goal but dragged his shot wide from prime position.

It was Grimsby's best chance to get level and the Mariners went home empty-handed. Chesterfield's game with postponed but Barnet lost. At the moment it looks like Barnet and either Town or Chesterfield will go down. Next weekend it is the one match that Town can't afford to lose, and one that they really have to win to still be in charge of their own destiny. It's the crunch home game with Chesterfield, the club beneath them, and the one team that stand in the way of survival and the dreaded return to the National League. Hopefully, Town will avoid their 21st game without a win, and realise their Coming of Age against Chesterfield with three points.
