Town Take a Point

Date: 21/01/2018

GRIMSBY ended their losing run with a point at Colchester. The Mariners took a deserved lead in the first half thanks to Charles Vernam's first senior goal but the U's pegged Town back in the second half which they scored right at the start of.

The Mariners dominated possession before the break, with Vernam and Berrett both having efforts saved, and Grimsby almost took the lead midway through the half when Osborne's shot hit the bar during play following a corner.

Russell Slade had to rethink when Jamille Matt was forced off injured after half an hour and Scott Vernon came on for the striker in a straight swap.

Town took the lead when Dixon and Vernon combined to set up Charles Verman for a deserved lead, and that remained the half time score.

Colchester equalised at the start of the second half when Murray shot from range through a crowded box after a goalmouth scramble.

Colchester had more possession in the second half but Grimsby held on for a good point.

The Mariners showed signed of improvement but will have their work cut out next week when they take on leaders Luton at Blundell Park.
